Embryo Transfer

Embryo transfer procedure for in vitro fertilization - IVF

The embryo transfer procedure is the last one of the in vitro fertilization process. It is a critically important procedure. The entire IVF cycle depends on delicate placement of the embryos at the proper location near the middle of the endometrial cavity - with minimal trauma and manipulation.

What is embryo transfer?

The transfer of the embryo (fertilized egg) into the endometrial cavity under ultrasound guidance using a needle that is passed through the muscle of the uterus up to the edge of the endometrial lining. Embryo transfer takes place after eggs have been collected and fertilised in the laboratory.Depending on your situation between one and three of the best quality embryos are selected and then transferred to the womans womb.An embryo must successfully attach itself to the wall of the womb for pregnancy to begin. Two to three days after the eggs are fertilised, the best quality embryos are selected to be transferred to IVF patients womb. The doctor or nurse doing the embryo transfer inserts a speculum into your vagina.A fine tube (catheter) is passed through the cervix, normally using ultrasound guidance. The embryos are passed down the tube into the womb. This is normally a pain-free procedure and usually no sedation is necessary, but you may experience a little discomfort because you need a full bladder if ultrasound is used. If you have good quality embryos, those that are not transferred can be frozen. Embryo Transfer is appropriate for women who have a very tight cervix that does not allow dilation or will not allow the passage of the small catheter used during embryo transfer. It is also appropriate for women who have had partial removal or resection of the cervix because of a history of cervical cancer.
