Fertility Programs

Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT) GIFT is a technique to maximize fertilization of the egg within the fallopian tubes, the natural site of fertilization. The eggs are retrieved vaginally, using ultrasound guidance, and placed into the fallopian tubes with sperm by laparoscopy or laparotomy.

This procedure is an option for those with non-tubal factor infertility and is similar to IVF because it involves controlled ovarian hyper stimulation and oocyte retrieval.

Unlike IVF, potential fertilization takes place in the fallopian tubes. With GIFT, retrived oocytes and sperm are placed in a catheter and transferred under laparoscopic guidance into the lumen of the fallopian tube.

Who needs GIFT?

GIFT is appropriate for the following types of patients:

  • Women with at least one normal fallopian tube
  • Couples where the husband has more than two million sperm in his ejaculate
  • Couples who have a moral or religious concern with IVF
  • Couple with unexplained infertility
  • Woman’s fallopian tubes aren’t blocked or damaged
  • Problems with the sperm
  • IVF has failed to result in a successful pregnancy.

Before GIFT can be performed, patients must have at least one normal fallopian tube documented by an x-ray (hysterosalpingogram) and the absence of scar tissue in the outside of the tube documented by laparoscopy.

One of the main differences between GIFT procedure and in vitro fertilization (IVF) and zygote intra fallopian transfer (ZIFT) procedures is that with GIFT the fertilization process takes place inside the fallopian tube rather than in a laboratory. However, healthy tubes are necessary for GIFT to work.

GIFT does not require hospitalization. The woman is in recovery for about eight hours after the procedure. A potential drawback of GIFT is the lack of visible confirmation of fertilization.

If you have failed IVF in the past, we can use advanced Assisted Reproductive technology to maximise your chances of getting pregnant. These options includes; transferring embryos; GIFT or gamete intra fallopian transfer ; or doing a ZIFT.
